Speaker Bagbin Warns MPs: ‘Quit Galamsey or Face Severe Sanctions’ as Ghana Battles Environmental Crisis

Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, dropped a bombshell in the House this week, vowing to crack down on lawmakers involved in illegal mining (galamsey) as the nation grapples with environmental collapse. During a fiery address on Tuesday, January 28, Bagbin warned MPs that Parliament would no longer tolerate complicity in the destructive practice, urging legislators to “lead by example or face consequences.”

“Honorable members, if you’re neck-deep in galamsey, advise yourselves,” Bagbin declared, his tone unyielding. “This House must bite the bullet. We cannot preach accountability while undermining it. If I uncover proof of your involvement, expect swift action.”
His ultimatum comes amid rising public fury over galamsey’s catastrophic impact—ravaged forests, poisoned rivers, and farmlands reduced to wastelands. Despite decades of government bans, military crackdowns, and task forces, illegal mining persists, often shielded by powerful figures, including politicians. Bagbin’s rebuke zeroed in on this hypocrisy: “As leaders, our duty is to protect Ghana, not profit from its destruction.”
The Minority and Majority benches largely backed the Speaker’s stance, though critics argue past pledges have yielded little change. Meanwhile, environmental activists applaud the move, calling it a long-overdue reckoning for political elites accused of enabling galamsey.
With Ghana’s 2024 elections looming, Bagbin’s warning raises the stakes: Will this finally curb the crisis, or will political allegiances trump environmental survival?
