President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, promising to improve its implementation amid ongoing challenges with infrastructure and food supply.

Initially launched by the Akufo-Addo administration in 2017, the policy has encountered several obstacles over the years. However, during his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) of his second term on Thursday, February 27, 2025, President Mahama made it clear that the programme would not be scrapped. Instead, he vowed to enhance it to better serve Ghanaian students.
“I, President John Dramani Mahama, the President of the Republic of Ghana, will not cancel the Free SHS programme. I’m determined to make it better by improving its implementation.”
With this pledge, Mahama is aiming to ensure that the Free SHS policy not only continues but also evolves to meet the growing needs of the nation’s educational system, ultimately providing a more robust and supportive environment for students across Ghana.
