President John Dramani Mahama is set to meet with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on January 19 as part of his continued efforts to secure lasting peace in Bawku, a region that has been embroiled in conflict for decades. This meeting follows a significant peace-building mission undertaken by President Mahama to Bawku and Nalerigu on January 14, where he engaged key stakeholders to appeal for restraint and patience.

During his visit to the Mamprugu Kingdom, President Mahama met with the overlord, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, and reiterated his government’s commitment to making peace in Bawku a top priority.
“I came to appeal to him and his subjects to exercise restraint and patience and trust that we will resolve this matter amicably. I’m appealing to my father and his people to give us time while I set up the government,” Mahama stated.
He emphasized that peace in Bawku would require a collective effort, drawing inspiration from past successful mediation processes.
President Mahama recalled a briefing with his predecessor, Nana Akufo-Addo, where ongoing mediation efforts were discussed. He noted the roles played by Nana Akufo-Addo, the late Yagbonwura, and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in resolving the Dagbon conflict, viewing it as a model for achieving peace in Bawku.
“In my last briefing with Nana Akufo-Addo before he left office, he informed me of some mediation efforts. I wish to discuss this further with him and see how we can continue that effort. Nana Addo also hinted at Otumfuo’s involvement, as Otumfuo played a vital role in resolving the Dagbon conflict,” he said.
President Mahama underscored the importance of his upcoming meeting with the Asantehene, who has historically played a pivotal role in conflict resolution.
“Otumfuo has been instrumental in past peace processes, and I will seek his counsel and collaboration on the Bawku issue. Whatever comes out of it, I will update Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II and other stakeholders,” he stated.
President Mahama’s actions signal a renewed commitment to resolving the Bawku conflict, leveraging the wisdom and experiences of respected traditional leaders like Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The government’s goal is to foster trust and dialogue among the communities, creating a sustainable path to peace.
