Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has assured Ghanaians that his administration will uphold the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, while exploring adjustments to ensure it aligns with the country’s unique needs and aspirations.

Speaking in an interview with VOA’s Paul Ndiho on Saturday, December 14, Mahama emphasized that his government sees the IMF programme as a critical tool for economic recovery. However, he hinted at the possibility of renegotiating some aspects to better address Ghana’s pressing economic challenges.
Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has assured Ghanaians
“We are not abandoning the programme—I want to make that clear,” Mahama stated. “We’ve requested discussions with the IMF because we were part of the negotiations for this programme. Within the framework of the programme, I believe there is room for flexibility and adjustments. If we can reach an agreement on these tweaks, we’ll continue the programme until its conclusion.”
Mahama underscored that stabilizing Ghana’s struggling economy would be the top priority of his administration, noting that economic health impacts all sectors, including education, agriculture, and sports.
“The economy will be our number one focus because when it’s in bad shape, it affects everything else,” he explained. “We are dealing with twin issues: macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability. In the past, IMF interventions focused solely on macroeconomic stability, but this time, the situation requires addressing both challenges simultaneously.”
Mahama’s remarks signal a commitment to fiscal discipline while also ensuring that Ghana’s economic recovery efforts prioritize the welfare of citizens. His administration is expected to balance meeting IMF programme requirements with policies tailored to Ghana’s socio-economic context.
