John Dumelo Urges More Youth to Embrace Agriculture to Tackle Unemployment for a Prosperous Future

Deputy Minister-Designate for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has underscored the urgent need for young people to actively participate in agriculture to drive the sector’s growth and help mitigate unemployment in Ghana.

During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Dumelo stressed that the agricultural sector offers numerous opportunities beyond farming, including roles in machinery operation, input supply, agro-processing, and value addition.

Expressing concern over the aging farming population, Dumelo noted that the average age of Ghanaian farmers ranges between 50 and 55 years, which could threaten the sector’s sustainability if not addressed.


“Ever since I got into agriculture and started sharing my journey on social media, I’ve seen a surge of interest from young people who now see farming as an exciting venture. However, not everyone needs to be a farmer. There’s an entire value chain—from hiring machinery to selling inputs and processing farm produce—that young people can explore.”

He emphasized that modernizing agriculture and making it attractive to the youth is essential for Ghana’s long-term food security and economic stability.


Dumelo also acknowledged the rising unemployment crisis in Ghana, describing it as a national challenge that requires urgent intervention. He assured that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is committed to revitalizing the economy and expanding job opportunities, particularly in agriculture.


“The unemployment situation is a national problem, and as part of the NDC’s agenda to reset the economy, we will ensure that job opportunities are created—especially in the agricultural sector.”

As Ghana continues to seek solutions to economic challenges, Dumelo’s vision highlights agriculture as a key driver of employment and sustainable development.
