President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the timely completion and operationalization of the Sewua Hospital in the Ashanti Region. Speaking at the first Akwasidae celebration of the year, held at the Manhyia Palace on Sunday, January 19, the President laid out plans to address the pressing challenges that have hindered the hospital's readiness.

The 250-bed Sewua Hospital is expected to play a pivotal role in reducing the heavy patient load on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). As one of the busiest healthcare facilities in the region, KATH serves not only the Ashanti Region but also patients from surrounding areas. However, the facility is operating far beyond capacity and is in dire need of renovations.

President Mahama emphasized that operationalizing Sewua Hospital would provide much-needed relief to KATH. By transferring patients to the new facility, the government could undertake critical renovations at KATH without disrupting its services.

“The Sewua Hospital is not operational because there is no electricity, no water, and the road to the hospital has not been constructed," Mahama stated.
"We will tackle these issues immediately and open the doors of the hospital to ease the pressure on Komfo Anokye.”

The Sewua Hospital project has been mired in political and contractual disputes. Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned the facility before leaving office, a move criticized by the project’s contractor, Euroget De-Invest S.A. The contractor claimed that key components of the hospital remained incomplete, including critical infrastructure like power, water, and access roads.

This premature commissioning sparked public outcry and raised doubts about the government’s commitment to delivering fully operational healthcare facilities.

President Mahama’s renewed focus on the Sewua Hospital highlights his administration’s broader goal of improving healthcare infrastructure across Ghana. The timely completion of the hospital will:

  • Alleviate overcrowding at KATH.

  • Enhance access to quality healthcare for residents of the Ashanti Region and neighboring areas.

  • Enable uninterrupted renovations at KATH, ensuring its long-term functionality.

The President’s assurances come at a time when many Ghanaians are calling for greater accountability and efficiency in healthcare projects. As efforts to complete the Sewua Hospital gain momentum, the nation watches closely to see if these promises will translate into tangible outcomes.
