The government of Ghana has reassured citizens of measures in place to secure an uninterrupted fuel supply during the scheduled maintenance of the West African Gas Pipeline this January. This critical infrastructure, which transports gas from Nigeria to Ghana to power thermal plants, is undergoing routine servicing to ensure its long-term efficiency.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Special Aide to the President, revealed this after a high-stakes meeting chaired by Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff. The gathering included key stakeholders in Ghana’s energy sector and addressed the impact of the temporary pipeline shutdown on power generation.
Ofosu emphasized the government's commitment to providing regular updates on the energy situation, stating,
"First, the government needed to be briefed, and then we had to determine actionable steps to ensure the nation’s fuel supply remains stable."
To tackle the situation, a technical committee comprising industry experts has been tasked with devising a roadmap by the end of the day. This plan will outline strategies to mitigate any potential disruptions caused by the gas pipeline’s maintenance.
The pipeline maintenance, known as pigging, was initially slated for October 2024 but was postponed to January 2025. This delay allowed the government to secure sufficient liquid fuels, which will serve as an alternative energy source during the maintenance period. However, concerns have arisen about the adequacy of the current fuel stock.
Mr. Frank Okyere, Director of System Operations at GRIDCo, explained, “The maintenance is critical for the integrity of the pipeline. However, the liquid fuels currently available are insufficient to cover the month-long maintenance period.” He stressed the need for additional fuel procurement to ensure a seamless transition during the pipeline shutdown.
The government has pledged to address these concerns swiftly, ensuring minimal impact on energy supply. President Mahama’s administration is actively working on solutions to prevent any disruptions to power delivery for Ghanaians.
This commitment highlights the government’s proactive approach in managing energy challenges and maintaining the country’s power stability.
