Tensions are running high in Weija Gbawe following the declaration of Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, as the Member of Parliament for the constituency in the 2024 general elections. Shaib secured victory with 32,608 votes, narrowly defeating his rival, Felix Odartey Lamptey of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who garnered 30,460 votes in a closely contested race.

Supporters of the NDC have besieged the Electoral Commission’s office, challenging the results and calling for a re-declaration. According to Wilfred Ayitey Blankson, Presiding Member of the Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly, the NDC is protesting irregularities in the parliamentary figures that led to Shaib's declaration as the winner.
Blankson expressed concerns about the escalating tensions, highlighting the proximity of the Electoral Commission’s office to the municipal assembly.
"We are for peace and cannot afford to let our efforts and rightful justice be undermined," he stated in an interview with Citi News.
He also urged the EC's leadership to address the matter promptly to prevent further unrest and possible damage to public property.
As the military and police remain on standby, the situation underscores the need for swift resolution to ensure peace in the constituency.
