The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s Professionals Forum has made a strong case for the retention of Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament in the forthcoming ninth Parliament.

The group lauded Bagbin’s exemplary leadership as head of the legislative arm of government, describing him as a unifying figure and a true representation of the NDC’s values and principles.
Proven Leadership and Institutional Strengthening
During an honorary ceremony in Parliament on Saturday, the President of the Professionals Forum, Sam Pee Yalley, emphasized Bagbin’s significant contributions to strengthening parliamentary democracy and bridging the gap between the NDC and the legislature.
“For those who work very close with you, they see you as the Speaker of Parliament. But we saw you as a pivotal link between the NDC as a party and Parliament. You represented the spirit of our party,” Yalley stated.
He also highlighted Bagbin’s commitment to institutional strengthening, commending his efforts to enhance the independence and effectiveness of Parliament as a critical pillar of governance.
A Call for Unity and Continuity
The forum underscored the importance of retaining Bagbin, especially in what they described as a “one-sided Parliament,” where effective leadership will be crucial for ensuring balance and progress.
“We want to be the first to dare say that our Members of Parliament should dare not make a mistake in changing you. We are not just making it a political call—we have researchers, people on the ground, and those who understand the ordinary citizen’s sentiments. The conclusion is clear: your leadership is needed now more than ever,” Yalley declared.
The Spirit of the NDC
Bagbin’s tenure as Speaker has been marked by a focus on fairness and strengthening parliamentary oversight, which aligns with the NDC’s vision for inclusive governance. The Professionals Forum expressed confidence that his leadership would continue to guide the legislative body toward greater achievements.
Looking Ahead
As the ninth Parliament convenes, the decision to retain or replace Bagbin as Speaker will be pivotal, not only for the NDC but also for the future of Ghana’s legislative framework. The Forum’s endorsement is expected to influence discussions within the party and among its Members of Parliament.
