Bimbilla, in the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region, has become the center of controversy over the distribution of relief items meant for farmers affected by recent floods and a dry spell. The relief, provided by the government in partnership with the World Bank, was intended to alleviate the struggles of the affected farmers, but disagreements over its allocation have caused confusion and unrest.

Reports indicate that in some districts, relief items have been looted by political party supporters, exacerbating tensions. In Bimbilla, the distribution process has been marred by political rivalries, with the items reportedly being split between members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The situation escalated further when Attah Suale, the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) parliamentary candidate, attempted to claim his party’s share of the rice but was denied. Speaking to Channel One News, Suale criticized the process, accusing the NPP and NDC of monopolizing the distribution.

“I was informed that the NPP and NDC have divided the rice, which is meant for flood victims, amongst themselves. This undermines the fairness and purpose of the relief effort. As a member of a registered political party, I demand equal treatment for the PPP,” he said.

In response to the tensions, Abdulai Yaqoub, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nanumba North, explained that a local committee was formed to ensure orderly distribution after incidents of looting in other areas. He added that the relief items were being shared among the NPP, NDC, the Nanumba Youth Association, the Traditional Council, and local security personnel to maintain fairness.

According to the MCE, the NDC has already received its share of 3,500 bags of rice, while the NPP’s portion is currently being loaded for distribution. However, the exclusion of smaller political parties like the PPP has fueled dissatisfaction and calls for a more transparent process.

This latest incident underscores the need for better management of relief efforts to ensure that aid reaches the intended beneficiaries without political interference.
