Tensions ran high at Ghana’s Appointments Committee on Thursday evening, as a fierce confrontation between Minority and Majority members led to the destruction of microphones and tables, forcing police intervention to restore order.

The dispute arose when the Majority insisted on extending the vetting session beyond 10 PM, a move strongly opposed by the Minority, who declared the day’s proceedings over. Amidst the standoff, frustrated Minority members disarranged tables, causing microphones to fall and break.
For nearly 30 minutes, chaos reigned until Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and other senior figures stepped in to de-escalate the situation. Acknowledging the damage caused, Ayariga announced the adjournment of the session, apologizing for the disruptions and assuring that MPs would conduct themselves appropriately when proceedings resume.
Following the incident, Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin defended his side’s stance, vowing that the Majority would not be deterred from asking critical questions during the vetting process.
“We have nominees who don’t even get questioned, but where necessary, we ask. Nothing will stop us from asking the relevant questions,” he stated.
Afenyo-Markin further accused the Minority of engaging in intimidation tactics.
“The NDC is always out to intimidate people—always bullying. They can call us a micro-minority, they can say whatever they want, but we have been cooperating,” he added.
He alleged that an agreement had been made to vet three nominees, but the Majority later attempted to push for more without proper consultation. “Today, we agreed to do three. The committee is on a partisan track,” he claimed, hinting at internal tensions over the vetting process.
With the session adjourned, all eyes are now on the next sitting, where lawmakers are expected to reconvene under heightened scrutiny.
