Ghana’s fiery social media activist and lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has walked back his explosive bribery allegations against Parliament’s Appointments Committee, issuing a public apology during a tense hearing on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.

The drama began when Barker-Vormawor claimed in a viral Facebook post that the committee had accepted bribes from ministerial nominees tied to President John Mahama’s administration. Committee Chair Bernard Ahiafor swiftly denied the accusations, demanding evidence and summoning the activist to testify.
Facing lawmakers, Barker-Vormawor struck a conciliatory tone, insisting his post was “misinterpreted.”
“My intention was never to accuse committee members of taking bribes. I aimed to spark dialogue about systemic issues through whistleblowing, not attack their integrity,” he clarified.
His lawyer, Nana Ato Dadzie, doubled down, framing the post as a call for accountability, not malice.
Ahiafor, while accepting the apology, reiterated the committee’s commitment to transparency: “Baseless claims erode public trust. We’re open to criticism, but it must be constructive.”
The saga has reignited debates about activism, free speech, and political accountability in Ghana. While some praise Barker-Vormawor for spotlighting governance concerns, others argue his approach risked undermining critical institutions.
As Ghana’s 2024 elections approach, the incident raises questions: Can whistleblowers drive reform without crossing into defamation? And will this apology cool tensions—or fuel deeper skepticism?
