Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine Slams Ato Forson’s Trial as a “Political Witch Hunt”

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has strongly criticized the trial of Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, labeling it a "political witch hunt" and insisting that Forson had no case to answer.
Dr. Ayine made these remarks while addressing concerns over the Office of the Attorney General’s decision to drop charges against several high-profile National Democratic Congress (NDC) members who had been facing prosecution.

NDC-Linked Cases Dropped Over Lack of Merit
The dropped cases include:
✅ The Saglemi Housing Project scandal
✅ Charges against former Bank of Ghana Deputy Governor, Johnson Asiama
✅ The Democracy Hub case
✅ Stephen Opuni’s prosecution in the COCOBOD trial
Dr. Ayine justified these decisions, asserting that many of the cases were weak, lacked legal foundation, and should never have proceeded in the first place.
“Some of these cases lacked common sense and were fundamentally defective. Continuing with them would have been a waste of state resources,” he stated.
Ato Forson's Trial: A Case of Political Targeting?
Speaking on the controversial trial involving Dr. Ato Forson and the procurement of ambulances, Dr. Ayine maintained that the case was politically motivated. He referenced a Court of Appeal ruling, which found that the trial court had erred in requiring Forson to mount a defense.
“I believed then, and I still believe now, that Dr. Ato Forson was a victim of a political witch hunt. The Court of Appeal’s judgment confirmed that the trial court was wrong to demand that he defend himself,” he asserted.
Despite this ruling, former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame pushed forward with an appeal—a move that Dr. Ayine dismissed as an act of desperation.
“When Godfred Dame vowed to file an appeal and actually did so, it was clear to me that he was only trying to save face. That appeal was, to put it bluntly, grossly incompetent,” he declared.
Judiciary and Political Interference: The Debate Continues
Dr. Ayine’s remarks have further fueled debates about the weaponization of the judiciary for political gains, with critics questioning whether legal institutions are being used to persecute political opponents rather than uphold justice.
As political tensions rise, many are watching closely to see how Ghana’s judicial landscape evolves under the current administration.
