Speaker's Suspension of Four MPs Sparks Allegations of Partisanship – Kojo Oppong Nkrumah Criticizes Speaker Bagbin

Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has taken issue with Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to suspend four MPs, calling it an act of partisanship.

On Friday, January 31, Speaker Bagbin suspended Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, along with NPP MPs Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib, barring them from parliamentary sittings for two weeks. The decision followed violent clashes during the Appointments Committee’s proceedings on Thursday evening and Friday morning.
In an interview with Channel One News, Oppong Nkrumah argued that the Speaker failed to follow due process, as the affected MPs were sanctioned without a fair hearing.
“The standing orders of the House do not grant the Speaker the authority to directly punish MPs. A special committee should have been set up to investigate the matter before any disciplinary action was taken,” he asserted.
The Ofoase-Ayirebi MP further criticized the Speaker for what he perceived as an uneven application of sanctions, noting that three of the suspended MPs were from the NPP while only one was from the NDC.
“If you watch the videos, you will see several NDC MPs involved in actions that could be deemed inappropriate. Yet, without proper inquiry, the Speaker chose to suspend three NPP MPs and only one NDC MP. Why not five? Why not six? Many people saw others involved as well,” he questioned.
Oppong Nkrumah hinted that the Minority is preparing to formally petition Speaker Bagbin to reconsider his decision, arguing that a more transparent and fair process should be followed.
With political tensions running high, all eyes are on how this latest controversy will unfold in Ghana’s Parliament.
