Commission (EC) has defended its decision to conduct the re-collation of election results at the Tesano Police Depot, asserting that the process is lawful and falls squarely within its constitutional mandate.

Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chair for Operations at the EC, made the clarification during a press briefing in Accra on Friday, December 13, 2024. His remarks were in response to claims that the choice of the Tesano Police Depot as the venue was improper.

“To ensure the safety of our staff and the integrity of the collation process following earlier disruptions, the commission, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, agreed to relocate the collation to the Tesano Police Depot. Party leadership was duly informed and asked to provide two agents as required by law,” Tettey explained.

The re-collation process was conducted for four constituencies—Fanteakwa North, Suhum, Akwatia, and Nsawam Adoagyiri—with party agents present as observers. However, the process for Nsawam Adoagyiri was stalled after the police deemed the security environment unsafe due to escalating threats from political supporters.

Tettey reiterated that relocating the collation process to the Tesano Police Depot was neither illegal nor contrary to electoral regulations.

“The law does not mandate the gazetting of collation centers; it only requires the commission to inform political parties of the chosen venues, which we did,” he noted.

The EC has appealed to all stakeholders, particularly political parties, to cooperate as the commission works to conclude the collation process in remaining constituencies, including Nsawam Adoagyiri, Dome Kwabenya, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South.
