The National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to convene on January 2, 2025, for a crucial meeting at the party’s headquarters in Accra. This gathering comes in the wake of the party’s significant defeat in the December 7, 2024, general elections, marking its first official NEC meeting since the transition to the opposition.

The electoral loss has left the NPP at a crossroads, prompting a call for deep reflection and strategic planning. High on the agenda is the selection of a Minority Leadership Team in the 9th Parliament. As the party prepares to assume its new role in opposition, this decision will be pivotal for maintaining cohesion, projecting strength, and regaining the trust of Ghanaians.
One of the most debated issues is whether to retain Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the current Majority Leader, in a key leadership position. Advocates, including Joseph Osei Owusu, Member of Parliament for Bekwai and First Deputy Speaker, have strongly endorsed Afenyo-Markin’s leadership, citing his experience, strategic thinking, and ability to unite the party.
“Afenyo-Markin’s political acumen and proven track record make him an excellent choice to lead the NPP in Parliament during this challenging period,” some party members assert.
However, others within the party have expressed the need for fresh leadership to rejuvenate the party's image and strategies. The NEC’s decision on this matter is expected to be highly contentious, with far-reaching implications for the party’s ability to effectively navigate its opposition role.
In addition to the leadership structure, the NEC is anticipated to tackle several pressing issues, including:
Analyzing the Causes of Electoral Defeat: Identifying the internal and external factors that led to the party’s loss.
Reorganizing Party Structures: Rebuilding the party at both grassroots and national levels to strengthen its foundations.
Developing a Reconnection Strategy: Addressing the disconnect between party leadership and the grassroots base.
The NEC meeting is a critical moment for the NPP as it embarks on a path of recovery and reinvention. Party stalwarts and supporters alike are looking to the leadership to provide clarity, direction, and a renewed sense of purpose as they prepare for the challenges of opposition and the 2028 elections.
