Frank Agyekum, spokesperson for former President John Agyekum Kufuor, has pointed to leadership missteps under President Nana Akufo-Addo as a significant factor in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) secured victory with a margin of over 1.6 million votes, a striking blow to the NPP.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr. Agyekum attributed the loss to growing public dissatisfaction with the NPP, exacerbated by what he described as arrogance from some party members. He also highlighted the imposition of unpopular candidates on constituencies as a major miscalculation that alienated the party's grassroots supporters.

“The signs were there, and the narrative shows that things have been unraveling for quite some time. We ignored the warnings and failed to take corrective measures, which is why we find ourselves here,” he said.

Mr. Agyekum underscored the principle of leadership accountability, stating that ultimate responsibility lies with the party’s leader.

“When things go well, the leader receives the credit. Similarly, when things fall apart, the leader must bear his share of the blame. President Akufo-Addo cannot be absolved of responsibility for this loss,” he asserted.

The spokesperson also criticized the process of selecting both presidential and parliamentary candidates, calling the choices subpar and disconnected from the desires of the party’s grassroots.

“There was arrogance, there was hardship in the system, and it seemed those in power failed to recognize the growing discontent. This disconnect between leadership and the base of the party likely contributed to this significant defeat,” he added.

As the NPP grapples with its electoral defeat, Mr. Agyekum’s comments serve as a call for introspection and reform within the party. The issues he raised—public discontent, leadership arrogance, and unpopular decisions—signal a need for the party to reconnect with its base and chart a new course for the future.
