The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has voiced its apprehension over what it terms "worrying developments" in the aftermath of Ghana’s peaceful December 7, 2024, elections. The party expressed dissatisfaction with how disputes in nine constituencies have been managed and called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to adhere strictly to electoral laws and procedures.

The PPP’s statement comes after the EC conducted a re-collation of results in seven of the nine contested constituencies. Following this process, all seven parliamentary seats were declared in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
While acknowledging the EC’s independence, the PPP reminded the Commission of its obligation to operate within the framework of Ghana’s electoral laws.
“We take notice of the independence of the Electoral Commission but also wish to remind it that it must respect its own structures and the laws under which it operates,” the statement read.
The party raised particular concerns about constituencies where no official declarations were made, urging the Police to support the EC in finalizing the process to ensure transparency and fairness.
The PPP strongly opposed the EC’s reported plans to re-collate and issue fresh declarations in constituencies where results were already officially announced. According to the party, such actions are not supported by C.I. 127, the legal framework governing the 2024 elections.
“Nowhere in the C.I. 127 is the word ‘re-collation’ mentioned, nor is there any provision giving the Electoral Commission the power to take such steps after designated returning officers have declared results in those constituencies,” the PPP asserted.
The party urged dissatisfied candidates to use the appropriate legal channels to challenge declared results. It emphasized that the High Court is the rightful platform for addressing electoral grievances, rather than revisiting results already declared by returning officers.
“We call upon the Electoral Commission to desist from meddling in the affairs of already declared constituency elections and allow aggrieved candidates to pursue legal remedies,” the statement added.
The PPP’s statement highlights the importance of maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s electoral process. As disputes over results in critical constituencies continue to unfold, the party’s call for adherence to established legal protocols underscores the need for impartiality and respect for the rule of law.
