Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has officially been sworn in as Ghana's Vice President, breaking barriers as the first woman to ever hold this esteemed position. With an illustrious career in academia and public service, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She has previously served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, becoming the first woman to lead a public university in Ghana. Her tenure as Minister for Education under President John Mahama was marked by transformative reforms, including eliminating makeshift “schools under trees” and enhancing access to quality education.


As Vice President, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang is expected to spearhead critical reforms in education, gender equality, and youth empowerment. With her proven track record, she is well-positioned to lead initiatives aimed at transforming Ghana’s education system, advancing gender parity, and creating opportunities for the nation’s youth.

Born on November 22, 1951, in Cape Coast, Central Region, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has spent her life breaking barriers. She earned her Bachelor’s and Diploma in Education from the University of Cape Coast before obtaining her Master’s and Ph.D. in English Literature from York University in Canada.


In 2008, she made history as the first woman to lead a public university in Ghana. Her tenure was transformative, marked by advancements in infrastructure and a strong push for gender equity. In 2020, she broke new ground again as the first female vice-presidential candidate for a major political party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).


Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s rise to the vice presidency underscores Ghana’s progress toward inclusivity and gender equality. Her appointment sends a powerful message to women and girls across Africa, encouraging them to challenge societal norms and take up leadership roles.
