Former Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Crabbe, has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to its weakened internal structure and lack of cohesion. Speaking on Point Blank, a segment of Eyewitness News, Mr. Crabbe pointed to disillusionment among party members as a critical factor contributing to the NPP’s struggles.

According to Mr. Crabbe, the party’s inability to align its governance achievements with the aspirations of its grassroots members has significantly eroded loyalty and motivation.

“If somebody does not believe that whatever the party gains in government will benefit him or her, there is no way they will wake up in the morning and go and sacrifice. They must believe that there is something in it for them,” he explained.

He warned against ignoring the concerns of party members, adding,

“You cannot just keep kicking the can down the road, thinking it’s going to be okay. That is not going to work.”

Mr. Crabbe also criticised the perceived disconnect between party leadership and its members. He argued that a lack of tangible benefits for grassroots supporters has demoralised the party base.

“When [the members] see you going about in air-conditioned vehicles and then you ask them to wait, they are not going to continue anymore. So, it is because the party is weak,” he stated.

The NPP suffered a significant defeat in the December 7, 2024, general elections, losing both the presidential race and a considerable number of parliamentary seats. The party now holds only 88 seats in parliament, a stark contrast to its previous standing.

Sammy Crabbe’s remarks underscore the need for the NPP to rebuild its internal structures, foster cohesion, and reconnect with its grassroots members to regain trust and loyalty. He stressed that without addressing these fundamental issues, the party’s future electoral prospects could remain bleak.
