Former President and NDC Presidential Candidate Mr. John Mahama has made a bold promise to the people of the Ashanti Region. During a recent courtesy visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace, Mahama assured residents that he is committed to completing unfinished development projects if elected in the upcoming December elections. His determination underscores the importance of addressing pressing developmental issues in a region that plays a crucial role in Ghana’s political landscape.

During the meeting, Mahama expressed his disappointment with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding what he termed neglect of essential projects over the past eight years. He specifically pointed to the Afari Military Hospital and Phase 2 of the Kejetia Market—two initiatives that have seen little to no progress since their inception.

“The last time I was here, I highlighted projects initiated during my tenure. While some were completed, others remain abandoned and are deteriorating. It is unacceptable that the Afari Military Hospital has not been completed after eight years,” he lamented. Reports indicate that the hospital was scheduled for completion in 2016 but remains unfinished, affecting healthcare access for over 100,000 residents.

Mahama emphasized that if the NDC returns to power, a renewed focus will be placed on reviving these stalled projects. He committed to ensuring that the Ashanti Region receives equitable attention in national development efforts.

Otumfuo Advocates Peaceful Elections

As discussions progressed, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, remarked on the political landscape leading up to the elections. He called upon all political leaders and their supporters to prioritize peace, stating that a calm electoral process is vital for the country's stability.

He encouraged Mahama to effectively communicate his past achievements, which include significant initiatives like the School Feeding Program and the National Health Insurance Scheme. “We pray for free and fair elections. Let the results from the polling stations speak for themselves, and may we all accept the outcomes. May God guide you and grant your desires,” Otumfuo commented. There’s a growing consensus that elections characterized by high voter turnout and absence of violence lead to improved governance—an aspect that the electorate should prioritize.

Rebuttal to Allegations

Beyond development, Mahama also addressed concerns regarding recent allegations tying him to an incident involving Otumfuo’s convoy in Techiman. He insisted that the circulating video footage is manipulated and asserted that such accusations are efforts to tarnish his reputation and that of the NDC.

“These allegations are baseless. I have great respect for the Asantehene and would never endorse such acts. This is yet another attempt to distract from the real issues facing the electorate,” he stated firmly.

This response reflects a broader strategy that Mahama hopes to employ throughout his campaign: directly refuting claims that detract from his message of development and unity.

Looking Ahead

Mr. John Mahama’s commitment to reviving unfinished projects in the Ashanti Region is a pivotal part of his campaign. By confronting past unfulfilled promises and engaging directly with influential local leaders, Mahama aims to rebuild the trust of voters in this crucial region.

As the nation prepares for the December elections, it is essential for both candidates and voters to engage in constructive dialogue that focuses on development and progress for all Ghanaians. The hopes of citizens rely on the fulfillment of promises and the dedication to implementing projects that truly enhance their quality of life.
