Today, January 6, 2025, marks the official dissolution of Ghana’s 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic, making way for the inauguration of the 9th Parliament. This transition signifies the end of a legislative term that began on January 7, 2021, and sets the stage for new parliamentary leadership and priorities.

The final sitting of the 8th Parliament, presided over by the Right Honourable Alban Bagbin, will wrap up all outstanding legislative business and provide Members of Parliament an opportunity to formally bid farewell to the chamber.

The 8th Parliament was historic for its unprecedented balance of power, with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) each holding 137 seats at its inception, alongside one Independent Member. This rare equal split fueled intense debates and negotiations, often shaping the course of Ghana’s legislative processes.

At midnight, newly elected Members of Parliament will be sworn in, marking the commencement of the 9th Parliament. This transition will also determine whether Speaker Alban Bagbin continues his role or is replaced, depending on the outcomes of the Speaker election process.

Looking ahead, the 9th Parliament will face significant challenges, including steering the nation through economic recovery, implementing healthcare reforms, and addressing unresolved electoral issues stemming from the recent general elections.

As the curtains fall on the 8th Parliament, Ghanaians will be keenly observing how the incoming legislative body fulfills its mandate and addresses the pressing needs of the nation.
